Programme introduces a new model for local oxygen management and crisis response.

Bhubaneswar, Sep 9: In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at strengthening India’s healthcare resilience, AIIMS Bhubaneswar hosted the National Capacity Building Programme on Medical Oxygen Management – Training of Trainers (ToT), officials said on Tuesday.

This first-of-its-kind programme, organized by the Department of Hospital Administration in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and AIIMS New Delhi, marks a major step toward standardizing oxygen stewardship nationwide.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, alongside key dignitaries including Dr. Dillip Kumar Parida, Dr. P R Mohapatra, Dr. Satyajeet Misra, Lt. Col Abhijit Sarkar, and Dr. Nirupam Madan. Dr. Vijaydeep Siddharth, Project Lead from AIIMS New Delhi, and Dr. Jawahar S.K. Pillai, Head of Hospital Administration at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, played pivotal roles in shaping the training modules.

V. Hekali Zhimomi, Additional Secretary, MoHFW, addressed the gathering via video message, emphasizing the importance of building capacity for medical oxygen management in light of lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shri Bharat Bhushan Dahiya, Technical Expert from Oxygen PMU, also participated in the event.

The training covered critical areas such as the planning and design of medical gas systems, regulatory frameworks, and the development of a robust oxygen ecosystem. Participants received hands-on instruction in adult, pediatric, and neonatal oxygen management, including ventilator use. A key highlight was the introduction of a stewardship model that promotes professional-led local oxygen management, regular audits, and rapid response strategies during emergencies.

A total of 74 participants from healthcare institutions across Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and multiple AIIMS campuses were nominated for this transformative training.

This initiative sets a precedent for future capacity-building efforts, ensuring that India’s healthcare infrastructure is better equipped to handle oxygen-related challenges in times of crisis.
