Koraput, Apr 12: In a bid to preserve the natural beauty of Deomali, Odisha's highest peak and a popular tourist destination, the Koraput district administration has implemented strict measures.
The measures were implemented to enhance the safety and sustainability of Deomali, ensuring that its natural beauty remains intact for future generations.
District Collector Keerthi Vasan emphasised the importance of maintaining cleanliness and biodiversity at Deomali and urged the citizens to take the responsibility to help maintain the pristine beauty of the peak.
The new measures include prohibiting visitors from staying at the hilltop between 8 PM and 5 AM. Tourists can only access the area through bookings approved by the state government or authorised organisations. Those wishing to camp overnight must obtain special permission from the district administration.
The administration has also banned single-use plastics and imposed fines for violations, aiming to make Deomali a plastic-free zone.
Deomali Hill, the highest peak in Odisha and the Eastern Ghats, is located at 1,672 metres above sea level. Its stunning panoramic views attract nature lovers for outdoor activities such as trekking, hang gliding and mountaineering.
Recently, it grabbed the eyeball after South filmmaker SS Rajamouli, who was in Koraput to shoot some major sequences of his upcoming flick SSMB29, raised concerns over the waste being dumped all over the hills.
The director’s social media post made local groups to swung into action. The group organised a cleanliness drive at the site - collected litter and cleaned the location.
