Bhadrak, Apr 9: Two persons arrested for allegedly committing theft at the Maa Bhadrakali Temple in Odisha's Bhadrak district have made startling claims during police interrogation, stating they fled the shrine after hearing “anklet sounds” and sensing an "unknown presence".
Theft Bid At Temple Premises
The accused, identified as Dipun Behera and Sipun Barik of Gadi Samantaraipur village, allegedly entered the temple premises on Sunday night.
The incident came to light the next morning after the donation box (hundi) was found broken, prompting a complaint and subsequent police investigation.
Arrest And Interrogation
Acting swiftly, Bhadrak Rural Police arrested the duo on Monday afternoon and later took them to the temple for further questioning.
A theft case (283/26) has been registered based on a complaint filed by the temple trustee and the Sub-Collector.
Accused Narrate ‘Mysterious’ Experience
During interrogation, the accused claimed they had initially visited the area to attend the local fair, ‘Ghoda Melan’, and later planned the heist after observing devotees offering money at the shrine.
One of them allegedly entered the temple by scaling the boundary wall, while the other stayed near the rear gate.
The intruder claimed that after breaking open an almirah inside the sanctum area, he heard the sound of anklets and noticed lights flickering inside the temple, which left him frightened.
Fled Leaving Behind Items
According to their statement, the accused abandoned some jewellery and attempted to flee. They further claimed to have seen a “large figure” approaching them, which forced them to escape in panic.
During the escape, some of the stolen cash reportedly fell on the ground.
The claims made by the accused have gone viral on social media, drawing widespread attention.

Bhadrak SP Manoj Rout said Maa Bhadrakali is a deeply revered deity, and the statements made by the accused are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
