Bhadrak, Jan 7: An act of bravery turned fatal for a youth in the Bant area of Bhadrak district, where a young man got seriously injured after being bitten by a snake -- he had captured and displayed publicly.

 

The injured youth has been identified as Subal Sahu.

 

According to reports, the snake was first spotted inside a house in the village. Instead of informing the forest officials or a trained rescue team, Subal Sahu attempted to show off his courage by catching the snake himself. He placed the snake around his neck and roamed the streets, entertaining the onlookers despite repeated warnings from local people. 

 

Eyewitnesses said that the youth was seen kissing the snake at times and repeatedly carrying it around his neck to portray himself as "Lord Shiva."  After some time, the snake suddenly bite him, leaving him in critical condition. He was immediately rushed to Bhadrak District Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Members of the Snake Helpline later reached the spot.

 

State Coordinator Pramod Kumar Sahu and member Jahangir Khan informed that the snake was a rare, colourful albino species. They said that such snakes are extremely valuable in the international wildlife market.

Meanwhile, Subendu Mallik, General Secretary of Snake Helpline, demanded a thorough investigation about the rare snake, considering its high international market value and the possibility of illegal wildlife trade.
