Boudh, Aug 23: At least 56 schools across three blocks in Boudh district have been issued show-cause notices for failing to provide midday meals to students on Independence Day, despite clear directives from the School and Mass Education Department.
According to reports, the department had mandated that all schools must serve cooked midday meals on August 15, designated as an “Observation Day.” A prior circular from nodal officers had reinforced this requirement. However, several schools reportedly failed to comply.
Taking note of the report, the District Education Officer (DEO) issued show-cause notices to 33 schools in Harabhanga block, 15 schools in Boudh block and 8 schools in Kantamal block.
The DEO has also issued notices to the respective Block Education Officers (BEOs) for oversight failures.
All 56 schools have been instructed to submit a written explanation within seven days.
The DEO has warned that failure to respond or provide adequate proof will result in strict disciplinary action. The move reflects the department’s commitment to ensuring student welfare and accountability in government-run schools.
This incident has sparked renewed attention on the implementation of the Mukhyamantri Poshan Yojana, which recently expanded midday meal coverage to students in Classes 9 and 10 across Odisha.
