Bhubaneswar, Sep 12: The Customs Department at Bhubaneswar Airport seized 50,000 Dubai-origin cigarettes from a passenger arriving on an IndiGo flight.

The seizure took place during a routine baggage screening, where officials flagged suspicious luggage and conducted a detailed inspection.

The passenger, identified as Sarbajit Singh from Punjab, was found carrying the undeclared consignment of foreign cigarettes, which violated customs regulations. He was immediately detained for questioning, and further investigation is underway to determine the source and intended distribution network of the contraband.

Officials stated that the seizure is part of a broader crackdown on smuggling activities and illegal imports, especially of tobacco products that evade duties and pose health risks. The confiscated cigarettes were not declared and lacked proper documentation, raising concerns about commercial intent and tax evasion.

With increasing instances of smuggling through air routes, authorities are stepping up surveillance and inspection protocols.
