Bargarh, Nov 17: The world-famous Bargarh Dhanu Jatra festival, celebrated as the largest open-air theatre in the world, is witnessing one of its most awaited events: the selection of the new Maharaja Kansa.
Considered the centrepiece of the festival, the role of Kansa draws immense public attention every year, and this season is no exception.
This year, as many as 44 artists have applied to play the
legendary villain. The auditions are being held at the Biju Patnaik Town Hall
in Bargarh, spread across three days. While the selection of supporting artists
has already concluded, the mega audition for the central character of Kansa is
currently underway.

Artists from various districts of western Odisha have gathered to showcase their talent, bringing diverse styles and interpretations to the stage. The Dhanu Jatra festival, which re-enacts episodes from the life of Lord Krishna, transforms Bargarh into Mathura and Ambapali into Gopapur. The portrayal of Kansa remains the festival’s biggest attraction, drawing thousands of spectators who eagerly await the announcement of the chosen actor.
As the auditions progress, excitement builds among locals
and visitors alike. Discussions are rife across the town about who will don the
crown of Kansa this year. The final announcement is expected to set the stage
for yet another grand edition of Dhanu Jatra, keeping alive a tradition that
