Bhadrak, Jul 31: A massive breach measuring approximately 200 feet has been reported in the Baitarani River embankment near Astaka village under Hasanabad Panchayat in Dhamnagar block of Bhadrak district.
The alarming development has prompted swift action from the local water resources department to prevent further damage and flooding.
The breach was first noticed by locals, who alerted authorities about the widening crack along the riverbank. Responding immediately, Dhamnagar Water Resources Department SDO Kishore Das and Assistant Engineer Sarat Chandra Ghadai rushed to the site to assess the situation.

✨Emergency containment measures were quickly initiated. Sandbags reinforced with polythene sheets were deployed along the breached section to stabilize the embankment and prevent water seepage. Additionally, arrangements were made to install bamboo fencing to strengthen the structure and hold back the river’s flow.
The situation remains tense as water levels in the Baitarani River continue to rise due to upstream rainfall. Local residents have been advised to stay alert, and further reinforcement work is underway to ensure the embankment holds.
