20 Gates Opened at Hirakud Dam as Inflows Surge

Key Points

Heavy Rainfall in Chhattisgarh raises inflows to nearly 2.9 lakh cusecs at Hirakud.

20 Sluice Gates Opened to regulate rising water levels, discharging 2.69 lakh cusecs. Residents Advised Caution in downstream areas as flood management protocols are activated.

Sambalpur, Jul 7: With the monsoon rains intensifying over Chhattisgarh, the water level in the Hirakud reservoir has risen significantly, prompting authorities to open 20 sluice gates to manage the inflow and maintain safety margins.

As of 8 am, the reservoir's water level stood at 609.81 feet, marking a steady increase due to heavy rainfall in the upstream region. Officials reported that water is entering the dam at a high rate of 2,89,943 cusecs, while a controlled release of 2,69,528 cusecs is being discharged into the river through the opened gates.

This strategic release aims to regulate pressure on the dam and minimize flood risks downstream. Engineers and the dam administration are closely monitoring the situation to ensure smooth outflow and protect surrounding regions.
