Bhubaneswar, Jan 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention Thursday. The three-day event is commencing Wednesday at the Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar and it will conclude Friday.

The convention carries a theme of "Diaspora's Contribution to a Viksit Bharat". Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi Tuesday urged the people to respect the Indian diaspora coming to attend the convention.

CM Majhi also noted that the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention is a great opportunity for Odisha to showcase its rich art, culture and heritage to the world.

First celebrated in 2003, the convention honours the role of overseas Indians in shaping India's progress, both socially and economically.

The date of January 9th is significant as it marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India in 1915, after his time in South Africa, which was a turning point in India's freedom movement.

Since then, the convention has grown into a biennial event, bringing together policymakers, diaspora experts as well as stakeholders to engage in discussions about India's development and the diaspora's role in it.

A highlight of the event is the presentation of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA). The award recognises individuals and organisations for their significant contributions in fields such as social work, humanitarian efforts, and enhancing India's global standing.

The convention aims to strengthen ties between India and its diaspora community, with a focus on cultural exchange, business networking, and knowledge sharing. The event has attracted participants from around the world, including content creators, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders.

With its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality, Bhubaneswar is all set to make the 18th PBD a memorable experience for all participants.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened around Bhubaneswar for the three-day long Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention.
