15-Day Deadline: Pay Your Fines or Lose Your Vehicle Registration

Key Points

Vehicles with over 5 unpaid challans may lose registration if fines aren’t paid within 15 days.

Over 10,000 vehicles identified; 200 owners already served notices.

E-detection systems at toll gates help track and flag defaulters.

Bhubaneswar, Jul 31: In a bold move to enforce traffic discipline, the Odisha Transport Department has initiated action against vehicle owners who have repeatedly failed to pay traffic fines. Owners of vehicles with more than five unpaid challans may soon face cancellation of their vehicle registration.

According to officials, over 10,000 vehicles across the state have been identified as habitual violators. Notices have already been issued to 200 vehicle owners in the first phase. If the fines are not paid within 15 days of receiving the notice, the department will proceed to cancel the registration of the concerned vehicles.

The crackdown is being facilitated through E-detection systems installed at toll gates, which automatically track vehicles with pending challans. These systems feed data into the state’s vehicle portal, allowing authorities to verify permit, fitness, and insurance status in real time.

Additional Transport Commissioner Lal Mohan Sethi stated that vehicles with repeated violations and no response to notices will be suspended under Rule 53. If fitness is not renewed within 2–3 months, registration will be permanently cancelled under Rule 55.

This initiative aims to curb reckless driving and ensure compliance with road safety norms. The department has warned that once registration is cancelled, such vehicles will not be allowed on the roads.
