Woman Doctor Quits After Assault by Shiv Sena Corporator; Civic Body Says No Resignation Received

Key Points

Dr Srushti Baviskar resigned from Shastri Nagar Hospital after being allegedly assaulted by Shiv Sena corporator Rakesh Mhatre; colleague Dr Vaibhav Salunkhe had previously resigned citing fear for his life.
Mumbai, Jul 9: A woman doctor who was allegedly assaulted by Shiv Sena corporator Rakesh Mhatre at a municipal hospital in Maharashtra's Dombivli has resigned, a day after another doctor involved in the incident said he had quit and left the city, citing safety concerns.

Dr Srushti Baviskar's resignation follows that of her colleague, Dr Vaibhav Salunkhe, who alleged that he feared for his life after being assaulted.

"I have resigned because there is a lot of fear. Goons are watching us, and I have already left the city. They are very dangerous people. The other doctors may continue working there, but I cannot. I will not go back there again," Salunkhe said.

Civic Body Disputes Resignation Claims
Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) Chief Medical Officer Dr Deepa Shukla said neither doctor has formally submitted a resignation.

She said both doctors were appointed through a third-party agency and had not submitted resignation letters either to the hospital or their parent agency.

"They are absent from duty without notice," Shukla said.

Assault Triggered by NICU Dispute

The incident took place at Shastri Nagar Hospital, run by the KDMC.

According to officials, the dispute began after doctors advised the family of a newborn to shift the baby to another hospital because the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was full.

The relatives then approached Mhatre, who allegedly arrived at the hospital with his associates. The argument escalated, and the corporator allegedly assaulted doctors and other hospital staff.

A video of the incident showed Mhatre striking the woman doctor from behind before allegedly attacking another doctor and staff members.
