West Bengal Records Highest Voter Turnout in Polling History
Historic Voter Participation in West Bengal

Key Points

West Bengal has registered its highest-ever voter turnout at 92.47% in the 2026 Assembly election, surpassing the previous record of 84.72% in 2011. Women voters outnumbered men, marking a historic milestone in the state’s polling history.

New Delhi, May 1: West Bengal has recorded its highest-ever voter turnout in the 2026 Assembly election, with 92.47% of electors casting their votes. The Election Commission confirmed that this figure surpasses the previous high of 84.72% registered in 2011, marking a new milestone in the state’s democratic journey.

Significantly, women voters outnumbered men in participation, with 93.24% turnout compared to 92.47% among men. This continues a trend first seen in 2011, when female turnout marginally overtook male participation. Historically, male turnout peaked at 84.27% in the 1996 Lok Sabha election, while women recorded 80.86% in the same poll.

West Bengal’s polling history reflects a steady rise in voter engagement. The first Assembly election in 1951 saw only 43.12% turnout, while the Parliamentary poll that year registered 40.49%. It took 15 elections before the state crossed the 70% mark in the 1980 Lok Sabha election, which recorded 70.62% overall turnout.

The 1977 elections, held after the Emergency, saw turnout dip to 56.15% in the Assembly and 60.24% in the Lok Sabha. Despite the lower participation, the polls were decisive, bringing the Left Front to power in the state and the Janata Party to the Centre.

The 2011 Assembly election was another landmark, with turnout reaching 84.72%. It marked the end of the Left Front’s 34-year rule and the rise of the Trinamool Congress-led alliance. Since Independence, West Bengal’s political trajectory has been shaped by three phases: Congress dominance in the early decades, the long Left Front era, and the more recent Trinamool Congress-led government.

The state’s political landscape also saw experiments with coalition governments in the late 1960s, particularly the United Front, which laid the groundwork for the Left Front’s eventual victory in 1977. These unstable coalitions highlighted Congress’ decline and paved the way for a new political realignment.

Who will form the next government will be known once the official results are declared on Monday
