Senior Citizen Empowerment / UP Govt Empowers Seniors to Evict Neglectful Children

New Delhi, Aug 26: The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced stricter measures to protect elderly parents and senior citizens from neglect and abuse, ensuring their rights and dignity are safeguarded.

Chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state cabinet approved amendments to the Uttar Pradesh Parents and Senior Citizens Maintenance and Welfare Rules, 2014.

Rule 22 has been expanded with new provisions (22a, 22b, 22c) that empower senior citizens to take legal action against children or relatives who fail to provide care or engage in mistreatment.

Under the revised rules, if children or relatives neglect or abuse elderly parents, district magistrates can initiate proceedings that may lead to eviction from family property. This move aims to guarantee seniors a respectful life free from harassment.

The government has also set a strict timeline for grievance redressal. Senior citizens can directly file complaints with the district magistrate, who must conduct a hearing within 30 days. Additionally, magistrates will submit monthly reports to the government detailing actions taken in such cases.

To further strengthen support, the state plans to launch a toll‑free helpline for senior citizens who are unable to visit offices in person. Through this helpline, elderly individuals can lodge complaints, and authorities will provide necessary assistance.

Officials believe these measures will significantly reduce cases of harassment and neglect, ensuring that senior citizens receive both protection and respect.

The amendments reflect the government’s commitment to upholding the dignity of parents and elders, while sending a strong message that mistreatment will not be tolerated.
