Seattle, Aug 16: In a landmark moment, the Indian national flag was proudly hoisted atop Seattle’s iconic Space Needle today, marking the 79th Independence Day of India.

This historic gesture represents the first time a foreign nation's flag has flown over the 605-foot-tall landmark, a defining symbol of Seattle’s skyline.

The ceremonial event was attended by Consul General of India in Seattle, Prakash Gupta, Mayor of Seattle Bruce Harrell, and several dignitaries from Seattle’s city leadership.

The gathering celebrated not only India’s independence but also the deepening ties between India and the Pacific Northwest, especially in the realms of technology, culture, and community engagement.

The event featured cultural performances, patriotic music, and remarks from key figures including U.S. Congressman Adam Smith, Chief Justice Debra Stephens, and Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho.

In a symbolic gesture of solidarity, King County and several cities including Tacoma, Spokane, and Bellevue issued official proclamations declaring August 15 as India Day.

Iconic Seattle landmarks such as Lumen Field, T-Mobile Park, and the Seattle Great Wheel were illuminated in saffron, white, and green to commemorate the occasion.
