Travel Light or Pay Heavy: Indian Railways Introduces Airport-Style Luggage Norms

Key Points

Indian Railways introduces airport-style baggage checks at select stations; excess luggage to attract fines up to 6x the booking rate.

Free luggage limits vary by travel class, with AC First Class allowing up to 70 kg and General Class up to 35 kg.

Pilot project launched at 11 stations; nationwide rollout expected soon.

Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: Indian Railways is set to implement stricter baggage regulations across select stations, mirroring airport-style checks. Passengers carrying luggage beyond the permissible weight limit will face hefty penalties, with fines reaching up to six times the standard booking rate.

The move aims to streamline travel, reduce congestion in coaches, and enhance safety. Under the revised policy, passengers will be required to pass their luggage through electronic weighing machines at station entry points. If found carrying excess baggage without prior booking, they may be fined or have their items offloaded.

Free Luggage Allowance by Class:

- AC First Class: Up to 70 kg

- AC 2-Tier / 3-Tier: 40–50 kg

An additional 10 kg buffer is allowed in most cases. Beyond that, passengers must book extra luggage in the parcel van. Oversized bags that obstruct boarding areas may also attract penalties, regardless of weight.

The pilot rollout is underway at 11 major stations under the Northern and North Central Railway zones, including Prayagraj, Kanpur, and Aligarh. If successful, the initiative will be extended nationwide.

Railway officials clarified that the policy is not meant to burden passengers but to ensure smoother travel and better management of onboard space. The new system is backed by an investment of ₹960 crore, which includes installation of weighing machines and scanners.
