Tamil Nadu Stunner: TVK Snatches Tiruppattur by One Vote

Key Points

In a nail‑biting finish, Tamil actor Vijay’s party TVK stunned Tamil Nadu politics by clinching the Tiruppattur assembly seat with a margin of just one vote, defeating DMK minister K.R. Periyakaruppan.
Chennai, May 5: Tamil Nadu witnessed one of its most dramatic election results on Monday as Vijay’s newly formed party, Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), made a thunderous debut in the state assembly polls. Out of the five states and one Union Territory that declared results, Tamil Nadu stood out with TVK’s remarkable performance, securing 108 seats in its very first election.

The most talked‑about contest came from Tiruppattur constituency, where the margin of victory was razor‑thin. TVK candidate R. Sethupathi Srinivas defeated DMK’s sitting minister K.R. Periyakaruppan by just one vote. Srinivas polled 83,375 votes, while Periyakaruppan finished with 83,374. This extraordinary outcome has become a symbol of how every single vote can alter political fortunes.

The Tiruppattur result was decided after 30 rounds of counting, with 12 candidates in the fray. The shock defeat of a minister in Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s cabinet has sent ripples across the political landscape. Analysts say this one‑vote margin will be remembered as one of the closest victories in Tamil Nadu’s electoral history.

TVK’s overall performance has been equally striking. Formed in February 2024, the party managed to capture 35 percent of the vote share in its debut election. Vijay himself contested and won from Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies, further cementing his party’s credibility.

Meanwhile, DMK, which had dominated Tamil Nadu politics for decades, faced a major setback. Chief Minister Stalin lost his own Kolathur seat by a margin of 8,795 votes, adding to the party’s woes. Despite winning 108 seats, DMK could not retain its grip on power, as TVK emerged as the new force poised to form the government.

The Tiruppattur shocker highlights the unpredictability of democracy and the decisive power of individual votes. For TVK, this victory is not just symbolic but a statement of intent — a party barely two years old has managed to topple seasoned leaders and carve out a new political chapter in Tamil Nadu.

As celebrations erupt among TVK supporters, the one‑vote triumph in Tiruppattur will remain etched in the state’s political memory as a reminder that every ballot counts
