New Delhi, Sep 5: On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Awards on 45 outstanding educators from across India at a ceremony held in New Delhi on Friday. The event was held to celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and honour the transformative role of teachers in shaping the nation.
Education as a Pillar of Dignity and Progress
In her address, President Murmu emphasized that education is as essential to human dignity as food, clothing, and shelter. She recalled her own time as a teacher, calling it one of the most meaningful periods of her life. “Sensible teachers instill a sense of dignity and security in children,” she said.
Teachers as Builders of Character
The President underscored that the primary duty of a teacher is to build character. She noted that students who are sensitive, responsible, and morally grounded are far more valuable than those focused solely on competition and academic scores. “A good teacher has both emotions and intellect,” she added, highlighting the importance of empathy in education.

Smart Teachers Over Smart Classrooms
While acknowledging the role of technology in modern education, President Murmu stressed that “smart teachers” are more vital than smart infrastructure. She defined smart teachers as those who understand their students’ developmental needs and make learning engaging through affection and sensitivity.
Girls’ Education and Women-Led Development
President Murmu made a strong appeal for prioritizing girls’ education, calling it an “invaluable investment” in building families, society, and the nation. She praised the National Education Policy 2020 for its focus on expanding Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and urged teachers to support shy and underprivileged students.
Vision for a Global Knowledge Superpower
Concluding her speech, the President expressed confidence that Indian teachers will play a pivotal role in making India a Global Knowledge Superpower. She called for excellence across school, higher, and skill education, urging educators to be recognized globally for their contributions.
