Supreme Court Seeks Centre's Reply On 28% GST For Online Gaming

New Delhi, Jan 09: The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Indian government on Monday, seeking its response to a plea challenging the 28% Goods and Services Tax (GST) levied on all forms of online real-money gaming. The E-gaming Federation filed the petition against the high tax rate, arguing it stifles the flourishing industry and creates ambiguity regarding the classification of games of skill versus chance.
Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud led the three-judge bench that acknowledged the ongoing similar petitions in various High Courts across the country. Senior advocate Harish Salve, representing the E-gaming Federation, and Additional Solicitor General N. Venkataramani for the government, both highlighted these ongoing cases.
