Kapurthala (Punjab), Sep 6: What began as a family’s heartbreaking farewell in Punjab’s Kapurthala turned into an astonishing twist when relatives who had cremated a body believing it was their missing son later discovered he was alive — and lodged in jail.
The youth, identified as Ravi Kumar, had left home on August 5 and did not return. His father and brother searched extensively but failed to trace him. On August 11, they filed a missing person’s report at Kapurthala City Police Station.
Days later, police informed the family that a burnt body of a young man had been recovered. Photographs of the deceased were shown, and relatives identified the body as Ravi Kumar. Convinced he had died, the family performed his cremation on August 13.

✨However, the story took an extraordinary turn on September 2, when the family received a phone call from an employee of Central Jail, Kapurthala, informing them that a man named Ravi Kumar was lodged there.
Investigations revealed that Ravi Kumar had been arrested by Jalandhar Police nearly a month earlier in a loitering‑related case and was sent to Central Jail. The revelation left the family stunned, as they had already mourned and performed his last rites.
The following day, the family visited the prison and were overwhelmed to find Ravi Kumar alive. The incident has raised serious questions about identification procedures and police communication, leaving the family both shocked and relieved.
