Jabalpur, May 1: A tourist cruise carrying 29 people sank in Bargi Dam on Thursday evening, leaving at least seven dead and eight missing, officials said.

The vessel, operated by Madhya Pradesh Tourism, reportedly lost balance during a sudden storm near Khamariya Island and capsized in turbulent waters.

Panic as Boat Capsizes
According to officials, 15 passengers managed to swim to safety amid rough conditions. Seven bodies, including two women, have been recovered so far, while search operations continue for those missing.

Eyewitnesses reported strong winds and sudden weather changes that destabilised the boat within minutes, turning a routine leisure trip into a disaster.

Rescue Efforts Intensified
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched an overnight rescue operation using searchlights, battling poor visibility and challenging conditions in the dam waters.

District Collector Raghavendra Singh and Superintendent of Police Sampat Upadhyay reached the spot to oversee the rescue efforts.

Survivors Under Treatment
Injured passengers have been admitted to Jabalpur Medical College for treatment. The cruise captain, Mahesh Patel, who was wearing a life jacket, survived the incident.

PWD Minister Rakesh Singh said authorities are focused on rescue operations and assured action if any negligence by the cruise operator is established.

Probe Likely
Officials said further investigation will determine whether safety lapses or weather conditions led to the mishap, even as rescue teams continue efforts to trace the missing passengers.
