Delhi Streets Under Blazing Sun

Key Points

Large parts of North and Central India are reeling under a severe heatwave, with Delhi and Prayagraj recording season-high temperatures above 44°C. The IMD has issued alerts urging citizens to take precautions as conditions are expected to persist until April 28.
New Delhi, Apr 26: North India is currently in the grip of a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages and raising widespread concerns over public health and safety. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for several states, warning that the extreme conditions are likely to persist until April 28.

In the national capital, Delhi, the mercury touched 44.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday, marking the highest temperature of the season so far. On Sunday, the city continued to swelter under oppressive heat, with maximum temperatures remaining above 40 degrees Celsius. Hot winds sweeping across the region have further intensified the discomfort, prompting authorities to advise residents to take urgent precautions.

The heatwave has spread across Northwest and Central India, severely affecting Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, Prayagraj recorded a scorching 45.2 degrees Celsius, the highest in the state this year. Officials have issued severe heat alerts in 32 districts, underscoring the widespread impact of the ongoing weather phenomenon. Meanwhile, regions in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha are also experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures hovering between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has cautioned that heatwave-like conditions may soon extend to parts of southern India, particularly Kerala and Mahe, signaling the broad geographical spread of the current weather system. Experts warn that if the trend continues, the intensity of the heatwave could increase further, posing serious health risks, especially to vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

Authorities have issued advisories urging citizens to avoid direct sun exposure between noon and 3 p.m., stay hydrated even when not thirsty, and wear light-colored, loose cotton clothing. The use of hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses has been strongly recommended. For those working outdoors, keeping a damp cloth on the head and neck can help reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. Strict warnings have also been issued against leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles, as temperatures inside cars can rise dangerously within minutes.

As India braces for more days of extreme heat, the current wave serves as a stark reminder of the growing challenges posed by climate change and the urgent need for adaptive measures to safeguard public health and well-being.
