Fresh Polls in Diamond Harbour and Magrahat Paschim

Key Points

The Election Commission of India has ordered repolling at 15 polling stations across two constituencies in West Bengal after reports of irregularities during the April 29 Assembly elections.
Kolkata, May 1: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced repolling at 15 booths in West Bengal’s Diamond Harbour and Magrahat Paschim constituencies, following complaints of irregularities during the Assembly elections held on April 29, 2026. The fresh polls will be conducted on May 2, with voting scheduled from 7 am to 6 pm.

According to the order issued by Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal, repolling will take place in 11 polling stations in Magrahat Paschim and 4 in Diamond Harbour. The decision was made after reports from Returning Officers and Observers highlighted irregularities, prompting the Commission to declare the earlier polls void under Section 58(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

The polling stations in Magrahat Paschim include Uttar Yearpur F.P School, Najra F.P School, Deula F.P School, Ghola Noyapara Girls’ High Madrasha, Ektara Malaya F.P School, and Bahirpuya Kurkuriya F.P School. In Diamond Harbour, repolling will be held at Bagda Junior High School, Chandra F.P School, Haridevpur F.P School, and Roynagar F.P School.

The Commission has directed that the widest possible publicity be given to the repolling, including traditional methods such as beating of drums in polling areas. Contesting candidates are to be informed in writing to ensure transparency and fairness in the process.

West Bengal recorded its highest-ever voter turnout since Independence, with a combined turnout of 92.47 percent across the two phases held on April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, with the ECI on high alert to prevent post-poll violence.

Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police have imposed restrictions on gatherings in seven areas where votes will be counted, following protests by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders at Netaji Indoor Stadium. The TMC alleged that ballot boxes were opened without the presence of their authorised representatives. However, Chief Electoral Officer Agarwal dismissed these allegations, assuring that the process remains secure and transparent.

The repolling order underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring free and fair elections in West Bengal, where political tensions remain high. As the state awaits the final results, all eyes are on the fresh polls in Diamond Harbour and Magrahat Paschim.
