  • A half-yearly exam question in Chhattisgarh listed “Ram” as one of four options for a dog’s name, sparking controversy.

  • Officials said the printer altered the original question; notice will be issued to the printer for explanation.
Raipur, Jan 9: A question in the English paper of a half-yearly examination has triggered a controversy in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district after the name “Ram” appeared as one of the options for a dog’s name in a multiple-choice question.

The question asked students to identify the name of Mona’s dog, with the options listed as “Ram,” “Bala,” “Sheru,” and “No one is mentioned.” Hindu right-wing organisations objected to the inclusion of “Ram,” a name revered as Lord Ram, alleging that it hurt religious sentiments.

Members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal staged a protest outside the office of the district education officer (DEO) in Mahasamund and burnt his effigy. The protesters also submitted a memorandum to District Collector Vinay Kumar Langeh, demanding action over the issue.

“I have received a complaint. The DEO will brief the media today about the factual status and submit a report to me. Action will be taken accordingly,” Langeh told The New Indian Express.

According to a report, the half-yearly examination papers were printed in Rajnandgaon district, around 150 km from Mahasamund. DEO Vijay Lahre said the printer had allegedly altered the original question provided by the education department.

“The school education department is not responsible for the change. Lord Ram is revered and worshipped by us as well. The printer will be served a notice soon seeking an explanation,” Lahre said.

Some parents also expressed resentment over the inclusion of “Ram” as an option for a dog’s name, describing it as inappropriate for students in lower classes.
