Rajnath Singh on Sindh: 'Rooted in Our Civilisation, Will Return to India One Day'

Key Points

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Sindh remains part of India’s civilisational heritage and may rejoin India in the future.
  • Speaking at a Sindhi Samaj Sammelan, he invoked LK Advani’s writings on the emotional and cultural ties Sindhi Hindus retain with the region.
  • Singh also defended the Citizenship Amendment Act, saying it was necessary to protect persecuted minorities.
New Delhi, Nov 23: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that while Sindh is not part of India today, the region remains firmly rooted in India’s civilisational history and could one day reunite with the country. His remarks came at the Sindhi Samaj Sammelan in New Delhi at a time when India–Pakistan relations remain tense following the May 2025 Operation Sindoor.

“Today, the land of Sindh may not be a part of India, but civilisationally, Sindh will always remain a part of India,” Singh said. He added that geopolitical borders are not permanent and noted, “Who knows, tomorrow Sindh may return to India again.”

Sindh, now a province in Pakistan, was part of undivided India before Partition in 1947. It is home to the Sindhi community and the site of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation. Singh invoked veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani while speaking about the deep emotional and cultural roots Sindhi Hindus continue to feel for the region, even decades after separation.

Quoting Advani’s writings, Singh said many Sindhi Hindus of that generation “still have not fully accepted the division of Sindh from India.” He added that the cultural reverence for the Indus River was shared by both communities. “Many Muslims in Sindh believed that the waters of the Indus were no less sacred than the Aab-e-Zamzam of Mecca,” he noted.

Reaffirming cultural unity, the Defence Minister said that people from Sindh, wherever they may live today, “will always be our own.”

Singh’s remarks have drawn attention in the context of current geopolitical tensions and are likely to elicit a strong diplomatic response from Pakistan.

During the same event, Singh also spoke about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), defending it as necessary for protecting persecuted minority communities in neighbouring countries. He said that the Sindhi community and others had suffered for years, but successive governments driven by “appeasement politics” failed to support them.
