Railways To Install CCTV Cameras In All Coaches for Enhanced Passenger Safety

Key Points

Over 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locos to be covered with dome-type CCTV cameras.

Cameras will monitor common areas to maintain passenger privacy while improving security.

New Delhi, July 13: In a major push toward modernizing surveillance across its network, Indian Railways has greenlit the installation of CCTV cameras in all 74,000 passenger coaches and 15,000 locomotives, officials said on Sunday.

The decision follows successful experimental trials conducted in Northern Railway coaches, which revealed a significant improvement in passenger safety and incident prevention.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, alongside Union Minister of State Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu, reviewed the initiative in a high-level meeting yesterday.

Senior Railway Board officials confirmed that each coach will be fitted with four dome-type cameras—two in each entrance area—while each locomotive will receive six cameras, ensuring 360-degree visibility across the system.

The cameras will be installed specifically in common movement areas near the coach doors to maintain privacy while effectively deterring theft, harassment, and gang-related activities on board.

Additionally, advanced microphones and cameras will be deployed inside locomotive cabs, including front and rear sections, for comprehensive monitoring.

Indian Railways plans to use STQC-certified equipment with the latest specifications to ensure footage quality at high speeds and low light conditions.

The Minister has encouraged integrating artificial intelligence into this ecosystem, in collaboration with the IndiaAI mission, to enable smarter analytics and real-time threat detection.

By focusing on safety without compromising passenger privacy, this initiative signals a robust step toward building a secure, tech-enabled travel environment. It reflects Railways’ growing commitment to ensuring safe journeys for millions of passengers every day.
