Key Points
Vijay’s TVK shatters Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian dominance with over 105 seats, ousting MK Stalin, elevating grassroots leaders, and positioning Vijay as the likely Chief Minister in a watershed political moment.
Chennai, May 4: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has rewritten Tamil Nadu’s political script with a stunning performance in the 2026 Assembly elections, breaking the six-decade dominance of the Dravidian parties.
Emerging as a decisive force, TVK is on track to secure over 105 seats in the 234-member Assembly, signalling a seismic shift in the state’s political landscape.
Among the party’s standout victories is Virugampakkam, where 30-year-old R Sabarinathan, son of Vijay’s driver, defeated seasoned DMK and AIADMK rivals by more than 22,000 votes. His win epitomizes TVK’s grassroots appeal and the rise of fresh faces in Tamil Nadu politics.

Crushing Blow to DMK
The election also delivered a crushing blow to the DMK. Chief Minister MK Stalin lost his Kolathur stronghold to TVK’s VS Babu, marking a rare defeat for a sitting CM. Several senior DMK leaders were ousted, though Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi managed to retain Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni by a margin of 7,140 votes.

✨A Debut for Ages
Vijay himself secured emphatic victories from Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East), defeating DMK candidates by margins of nearly 50,000 and 23,000 votes respectively.
His dual triumphs, coupled with TVK’s statewide surge, firmly position him as the likely incoming Chief Minister and the newest cinema-politics crossover leader.
As counting nears completion, TVK appears just short of the 118-seat majority mark, making coalition support crucial for government formation.
The focus now shifts to how Vijay consolidates this historic breakthrough and navigates alliances to secure a stable administration.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu verdict is more than an electoral win — it
is a watershed moment. It dismantles entrenched political binaries, elevates
new voices, and redefines the state’s future.
