New Delhi, Dec 5: Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to India, saying the Indian leader “lives and breathes his country” and is someone he deeply trusts.

In a joint conversation with India Today and Aaj Tak, Putin said, “I am very happy that I am going to have a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as it was decided long back.”

Speaking about his personal equation with the Prime Minister, the Russian President said, “We have very trustworthy and friendly relations. He is a very reliable person. I’m speaking very sincerely—India got lucky. He lives and breathes India.”

Calling it a “great pleasure” to interact with Modi, he added that the Prime Minister is “a person of integrity”. Putin said, “He is deeply committed to strengthening ties between India and Russia across a wide spectrum -- economic cooperation, defence, humanitarian engagement, and high-technology development. It is very interesting to meet him.”

Recalling Modi’s earlier visit to Moscow, Putin described their private interaction in unusually candid terms. “He travelled here, and we sat together at my residence. We drank tea the whole evening and discussed a range of topics. We simply had an interesting conversation, purely like humans,” he said.

Putin arrived in New Delhi on Thursday for a two-day visit at Modi’s invitation, aimed at reinforcing the longstanding India–Russia partnership that has stayed steady despite global geopolitical turbulence. The talks are expected to cover defence cooperation, trade expansion, and collaborative technological projects.

In a notable personal gesture, Prime Minister Modi received Putin at the airport with a warm embrace. The two leaders drove together in the Prime Minister’s car to his residence, where Modi hosted the Russian President for a private dinner.

This meeting comes three months after their interaction in Tianjin during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, where Putin drew attention by driving Modi in his personal vehicle—a symbolic move at a time of shifting global political currents.
