New Delhi, Nov 24: Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, fondly known as Bollywood’s “He-Man”, passed away on Monday at the age of 89, leaving behind a remarkable legacy spanning over six decades. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders expressed their heartfelt condolences on the demise of the veteran actor, highlighting his towering presence and enduring influence on Indian cinema and culture.

 

President Murmu Pays Tribute

President Murmu, in her message, described Dharmendra’s demise as “a great loss to Indian cinema.” She cited his memorable performances and the inspiration he provided to generations, extending heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and admirers.

 

In a post on X, President Murmu said: "The demise of veteran actor and former Member of Parliament Shri Dharmendra Ji is a great loss to Indian cinema. One of the most popular actors, he delivered numerous memorable performances during his decades-long illustrious career. As a towering figure of Indian cinema, he leaves behind a legacy which will continue to inspire young generations of artists. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and admirers."

 

PM Modi Pays Tribute

PM Modi also took to social media platform X to condole the passing away of legendary actor Dharmendra, describing it as the end of an era in Indian cinema.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said: “The passing of Dharmendra Ji marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played. The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people. Dharmendra Ji was equally admired for his simplicity, humility and warmth. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends and innumerable fans. Om Shanti.”

A Career Of Timeless Performances

Debuting in 1960 with “Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere,” Dharmendra worked in more than 300 films throughout his career. His charm, warmth, and timeless performances in films like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, and Phool Aur Patthar shaped generations of movie lovers. He was last seen in the movie Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya in 2024.

 

Beyond The Silver Screen

Dharmendra was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2012. He also served as a Member of the Parliament (Lok Sabha) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), representing Bikaner in Rajasthan from 2004 to 2009.

Battling with illness in recent years, Dharmendra’s demise at his Mumbai residence marks the end of an era in Indian cinema.
