Kalyani, July 30: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday attended the inaugural convocation ceremony of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Kalyani in West Bengal marking a historic milestone for the institution and its first graduating batch.

The President conferred degrees upon 48 MBBS graduates and 9 Post-Doctoral Certificate Course (PDCC) scholars. This marks a significant milestone for AIIMS Kalyani, which began its journey in 2019.
Addressing the ceremony, President Murmu emphasized the pivotal role of doctors in shaping the nation’s health landscape. She noted that India’s average life expectancy has more than doubled since independence—from 32 years to nearly 70—thanks to medical advancements and vaccination efforts. She cited the eradication of trachoma as a recent achievement, while urging young doctors to take on emerging challenges such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

✨The President congratulated the graduating students, calling them the senior-most alumni and future torchbearers of AIIMS Kalyani. She encouraged them to uphold the legacy of the city’s founder, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, who served patients free of cost even during his tenure as Chief Minister. She urged the institute’s faculty and students to make AIIMS Kalyani an “Institute of National Pride.”
Highlighting the rapid evolution of medical science, President Murmu advised students to remain lifelong learners and stay abreast of new research and techniques. She also stressed the importance of doctors adopting healthy lifestyles themselves, noting that their personal habits can influence public behavior more than any prescription.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including West Bengal Governor Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose and Union Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav.
