Bengaluru, Jan 29: In a move aimed at improving work–life balance and emotional well-being among police personnel, the Karnataka Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP) has issued a circular directing unit heads to grant leave on birthdays and wedding anniversaries to officers who request it.

The circular, issued from the Office of the DG & IGP, Karnataka State Police, emphasises the importance of family time for police personnel who routinely work under high stress and demanding conditions. It states that allowing officers to spend such personal occasions with their families can help reduce mental stress, improve morale and contribute to better overall performance.

According to the order, police officers and staff often miss important personal milestones due to professional commitments, which can affect emotional health and family relationships. Recognising these challenges, the department has instructed all unit heads to grant leave without fail on such special occasions whenever personnel apply for it.

The circular further notes that improved emotional well-being and reduced stress levels can positively impact job satisfaction, discipline and productivity, thereby strengthening the functioning of the police force. It underlines that a motivated and mentally healthy workforce is essential for effective policing.

The directive also acknowledges the sacrifices made by police personnel and their families, stating that institutional support during personal milestones is a step towards recognising their dedication and service.

The order, dated January 29, 2026, has been circulated to all units across the state for strict compliance.
