New Delhi/Jakarta, Jul 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced the establishment of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore’s (IIMB) first international campus in Indonesia, describing it as a landmark step in the globalisation of India’s higher education ecosystem.
The proposed campus will be located at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Malang, Indonesia. PM Modi said the initiative would benefit youth across the ASEAN region and strengthen India’s role as a trusted global knowledge partner.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan hailed the
announcement as a milestone under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. In
a post on X, he called the launch of the IIM Bangalore (Singhasari) Campus “a
landmark moment in the India–Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,”
adding that it would create new opportunities for students while advancing a
future-ready knowledge ecosystem.

✨The new campus will focus on global supply chains, digital
transformation, artificial intelligence, climate and sustainability, and
healthcare. Pradhan also highlighted the signing of MoUs to deepen cooperation
in AI, telecommunications, Digital Public Infrastructure and startups,
reinforcing the shared commitment of India and Indonesia to empowering youth
through technology and innovation.

The announcement builds on India’s recent expansion of premier institutions overseas, including IIM Ahmedabad in Dubai, IIT Delhi in Abu Dhabi, and IIT Madras in Zanzibar. Officials said the initiative underscores India’s growing stature as a global education hub committed to excellence in teaching, research and innovation.
Rooted in centuries of civilisational ties, the India–Indonesia partnership has gained fresh momentum with the launch of the IIMB campus. Both leaders emphasised that the move reflects a shared vision of inclusive growth and knowledge-driven development.
The announcement was made during PM Modi’s delegation-level talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta, where the two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral ties and witnessed the exchange of MoUs in key sectors.
