Bhubaneswar, Oct 19: Listening to music or watching videos on mobile phones during train journeys is a common habit for many passengers. However, using loudspeakers instead of earphones could now prove costly.

Authorities have further warned that repeated violations could attract harsher penalties. According to available information, offenders may face up to six months of imprisonment along with fines reaching ₹5,000, depending on the circumstances and applicable railway laws.

To enforce these rules, ticket examiners (TTEs) and officials from the commercial department will monitor such incidents closely. Railways also plan to raise awareness among passengers through announcements in Hindi, English, and regional languages at stations and inside trains.

The move comes in response to growing complaints from passengers about loud mobile usage disrupting journeys. Officials emphasized that trains are public spaces, and every traveler has the right to a peaceful environment.

Passengers are advised to use earphones for entertainment and avoid loud conversations or disruptive behaviour. Railways reiterated that small acts of negligence can inconvenience many, urging travellers to respect the comfort of others.
