The Ministry of External Affairs has revised passport fees for the first time since 2012, with a fresh 36-page passport costing ₹2,500 under the normal scheme and ₹5,000 under Tatkaal, effective July 1.
New Delhi, Jun 25: The Centre has increased passport fees for the first time in nearly 14 years, raising the cost of a fresh passport to ₹2,500 under the normal scheme and ₹5,000 under the Tatkaal scheme with effect from July 1.
The revised fee structure was notified by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) through the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026, and will apply to all applications submitted on or after July 1.
Fresh Passport, Reissue To Cost More
Under the revised rates, a 36-page passport for applicants aged 18 years and above will cost ₹2,500 under the normal scheme, up from ₹1,500 currently. The Tatkaal fee has been increased from ₹3,500 to ₹5,000.
For a 60-page passport, the fee has been raised from ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 under the normal category and from ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 under the Tatkaal scheme.
The revision marks the first major increase in passport charges since 2012.
Replacement Of Lost Or Damaged Passports Costlier
Applicants seeking replacement of lost or damaged passports will also face higher charges.
A replacement 36-page passport will now cost ₹5,000 under the normal scheme and ₹7,500 under Tatkaal. For a 60-page passport, the charges have been fixed at ₹6,000 and ₹8,500, respectively.
Revised Charges For Minors
For applicants below 18 years of age, a fresh or reissued 36-page passport will cost ₹1,750 under the normal scheme and ₹4,250 under Tatkaal.
The fee for replacing a lost or damaged passport for minors has been fixed at ₹4,250 under the normal category and ₹6,750 under the Tatkaal scheme.
Other Travel Documents Also Affected
The notification also revises fees for several passport-related services and travel documents.
While Emergency Certificates will continue to be issued free of cost within India, applicants abroad will have to pay USD 15.
A Certificate of Identity will cost ₹1,000 in India and USD 50 abroad.
The fee for Police Clearance Certificates (PCC), Surrender Certificates, Global Entry Program verification and other passport-related certificates has been fixed at ₹750 in India and USD 40 abroad.

First Revision Since 2012
The last revision of passport fees was carried out in 2012, when the government increased the fee for a standard 36-page passport from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 and the Tatkaal fee from ₹2,500 to ₹3,500.
The latest hike comes a day after the government clarified that a passport is primarily a travel document and should not be treated as conclusive proof of Indian citizenship.
