New Delhi, Mar 11: Air India announced today that it will introduce a phased increase in fuel surcharges across both its domestic and international network. The decision comes in response to a sharp rise in jet fuel prices, which the airline attributed to disruptions in global energy markets caused by the ongoing Iran-US war in the Middle East.

According to the airline, the surcharge hike will be rolled out gradually to minimize the immediate impact on passengers while ensuring operational sustainability.

Air India officials stated that the increase is unavoidable, given the steep escalation in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs, which account for a significant portion of airline operating expenses.

The carrier gave a slab of rates that it will implement in three phases.

Passengers travelling on domestic routes will see incremental increases in ticket prices, while international travellers will face higher surcharges depending on the length and destination of their flights. The airline emphasized that the phased approach is designed to spread the burden rather than impose a sudden hike.

The announcement has sparked concern among frequent flyers, who fear higher travel costs in the coming months.

Air India has assured customers that despite the surcharge increase, it remains committed to offering competitive fares and reliable service across its network.

The ongoing Iran-US war in the Middle East has begun to severely impact global energy and trade flows, with natural gas supplies facing significant disruption. For more than two weeks, the Strait of Hormuz a vital maritime chokepoint-has remained within the conflict zone, leading to widespread delays in international shipping.

Reports indicate that over 750 cargo ships are currently stranded at major ports in the region, unable to move through the strait due to heightened military activity and security risks.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, handling a substantial portion of global oil and natural gas exports. Its closure or obstruction has immediate consequences for energy markets worldwide.
