New Delhi, Apr 22: Pahalgam attack on April 22 marks one year since the horrific terror attack at Baisaran in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives and left the nation in shock. The picturesque meadow, often called “mini-Switzerland,” turned into a site of devastation when three Pakistan-backed terrorists opened fire on tourists, specifically targeting Hindu men.

The attack began near the exit gate of the fenced meadow, with no security personnel present. Survivors recounted how the terrorists separated men from women and children, asking them to identify their faith before shooting them at close range. Reports confirmed that trousers of many victims were found unzipped, indicating the attackers checked religious identity before killing.

Among the most haunting images was that of Himanshi Narwal, newly married, slumped beside her husband Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, a naval officer shot point-blank. Her plea for peace and rejection of communal hate resonated across the country. Another victim, Pune businessman Santosh Jagdale, was killed after failing to recite the Islamic Kalima, while others survived by chanting it.

The Resistance Front, a proxy of Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the probe, while India responded with strong diplomatic and military measures. New Delhi suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, expelled Pakistani diplomats, and launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.

Later, Operation Mahadev was initiated to track down the attackers. Using drones, advanced surveillance, and elite PARA (Special Forces), security forces compressed the operational grid from 300 square kilometres to 25. On July 28, 2025, after a 93-day pursuit, all three terrorists were neutralised in a precise operation.

The attack worsened India-Pakistan relations, leading to intense military conflict before a ceasefire was announced on May 10. Yet, the memory of the attack remains etched in the nation’s consciousness, symbolised by the photograph of Himanshi Narwal.

As the anniversary is observed, survivors and families continue to demand justice, while the country remembers the lives lost and the resilience shown in the face of terror.
