Padma Shri Awardee, Noted Educationist DY Patil Passes Away at 90

Kolhapur, Aug 4: Padma Shri awardee, former Governor and noted educationist Dr DY Patil died at his residence in Kasba Bawda, Kolhapur, on Tuesday following a prolonged age-related illness. He was 90.

Born on October 22, 1935, Patil served as the Governor of Tripura, Bihar and West Bengal during his public life.

Family Announces Demise
Announcing his death, Smita Jadhav, Pro-Vice Chancellor of DY Patil Vidyapeeth in Pimpri and his granddaughter, paid tribute to his legacy.

"It is with profound grief and a heavy heart that I inform you of the sad demise of our beloved Founder, Hon'ble Dr DY Patil Sir. His visionary leadership, unwavering commitment to education, and extraordinary legacy have shaped countless lives and institutions. His passing is an irreparable loss to the entire DY Patil family," she said in a statement.

Pioneer in Education
Patil founded the DY Patil Group, which grew into one of India's largest private education networks. The group comprises more than 182 educational institutions, seven universities and several healthcare facilities across the country.

Widely known as "Dada", he was recognised for his contributions to education and social service, receiving the Padma Shri in 1991.

Survived by Family
Patil is survived by his sons, Congress MLC Satej Patil, Sanjay Patil and Ajinkya Patil, and his daughter, Nandita Palshetkar.

His death marks the end of a decades-long career spanning public service, education and institution-building, during which he played a key role in expanding access to higher education and healthcare in India.
