Raipur, May 21: As many as 26 Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces along the Narayanpur-Bijapur border in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday.
Acting on reliable inputs about the presence of Maoists in Abhujmad region, the security forces launched a combing operation. During the search operation, the Maoists opened fire and soon a gunfight broke out.
During the exchange of fire, the joint teams of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) from Narayanpur, Bijapur, Dantewada, and Kanker districts gunned down at least 26 Naxalites.
“Naxalites opened indiscriminate fire as our teams approached their hideout. In retaliatory action, more than 26 Maoists were killed,” a senior police officer said, adding that weapons and other materials were recovered from the site.
The encounter, which started early Wednesday, is still ongoing.
