New Delhi, Mar 13:Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the escalating tensions in West Asia, as concerns grow over regional stability, maritime security and energy supplies. The development triggered reactions from leaders across the political spectrum in India, with some opposition figures welcoming the diplomatic outreach while others questioned the broader direction of the country’s foreign policy.
Sharing details of the conversation on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said both leaders discussed the deteriorating situation in the region. Modi expressed deep concern over the escalation of tensions and the loss of civilian lives, along with damage to civilian infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict.
He emphasised that India’s immediate priorities remain the safety and security of Indian nationals in the region and ensuring the uninterrupted movement of essential goods and energy supplies. The Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to peace and stability, stressing the need for dialogue and diplomacy to address the crisis.

Reacting to the development, Lok Sabha member Pappu Yadav described the outreach as a positive step if it reflects India acknowledging its longstanding relationship with Iran. Speaking to IANS, Yadav said Iran has historically been a friend of India and developments in West Asia could have significant implications for the country.
However, Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat raised concerns over the effectiveness of the diplomatic engagement. He referred to media reports of an attack in the Strait of Hormuz involving a cargo ship travelling from Thailand to India, questioning what outcomes had emerged from the discussions.
Meanwhile, Bihar Minister Ashok Choudhary said the government remains attentive to public concerns and will take necessary steps to prevent disruptions. BJP Bihar President Sanjay Saraogi also defended the government, accusing the opposition of attempting to create panic and asserting that authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure uninterrupted supplies to India.
