Chennai, Sep 19: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has announced a unique welfare initiative under which every child born in government hospitals will receive a one‑gram gold coin.
The scheme, set to be launched on September 28, fulfills a key election promise made by Vijay and his party, TVK.
According to officials, the state government has already procured 1.28 lakh one‑gram gold coins for the first phase.

✨Each coin will carry a serial number and standardized packaging to ensure authenticity. Initially scheduled to begin on September 15, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister N. Annadurai, the launch was postponed due to Vijay’s London visit.
Eligibility conditions have been outlined: only permanent residents of Tamil Nadu will benefit, meaning the gold coin will be gifted exclusively to newborns of families residing in the state.
The scheme, named Thai Maman Gold Coin Scheme in the TVK manifesto, was one of Vijay’s standout promises during the assembly elections.
In his manifesto, he pledged that if elected, his government would provide one‑gram gold coins to newborns. Now, as Chief Minister, he is moving to deliver on that commitment.
TVK had also promised additional welfare measures, including
gifting eight grams of gold and a premium silk saree to sisters during their
weddings. The gold coin scheme for newborns is seen as the first step in
fulfilling these pledges.
