Bhubaneswar, Dec 13: As many as nine flights were cancelled from Bhubaneswar in a single day on Saturday, causing inconvenience to passengers travelling to major cities, including Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad. Airport sources said all the cancelled services belonged to IndiGo Airlines.
The cancellations come amid a nationwide operational disruption faced by IndiGo over the past several days. The airline has acknowledged large-scale flight cancellations across the country and said the estimated compensation for affected passengers could exceed Rs 500 crore. IndiGo has stated that it is identifying flights where passengers were severely impacted and stranded between December 3 and 5, and that it will reach out to such customers in January to extend compensation.
Despite the disruptions, the airline said it expects to operate over 2,000 flights as services gradually return to normal. Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has suspended four Flight Operations Inspectors in connection with the recent flight disruption crisis. These officials were responsible for overseeing airline safety, pilot training and operational compliance.
IndiGo has also announced that its board has approved the appointment of an independent consulting firm, Chief Aviation Advisors LLC, led by Captain John Illson, to conduct a root-cause analysis of the disruptions and recommend corrective measures. IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has appeared before aviation regulators, while affected passengers have been offered refunds, compensation mandated by the government, and an additional Rs 10,000 travel voucher valid for 12 months.
