Nandigram Hero to Bengal Kingmaker: The Suvendu Adhikari Story
Suvendu Adhikari — From Mamata’s Lieutenant to BJP’s Gamechanger

Key Points

Suvendu Adhikari’s rise in Bengal politics is a story of rebellion and strategy. Once Mamata Banerjee’s trusted aide, he became a grassroots hero during the Nandigram land agitation and later defeated her in the 2021 polls. By 2026, his organizational skills and sharp attacks on TMC helped BJP secure a historic majority, making him the key architect of Bengal’s political transformation and the state’s new kingmaker.
Kolkata, May 4: As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepares to form its first government in West Bengal, one name stands out among the architects of this historic victory — Suvendu Adhikari. Once a trusted lieutenant of Mamata Banerjee, Adhikari’s journey from loyalty to rebellion has reshaped Bengal’s political landscape.

Born on December 15, 1970, in Kanthi, East Medinipur, Suvendu hails from a powerful political family. His father, Shishir Adhikari, has long been a respected figure in Bengal politics, and the family’s influence in Medinipur remains strong. Suvendu began his career in 1989 with the Congress student wing, later joining Mamata Banerjee when she founded the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 1998.

His defining moment came in 2007 during the Nandigram land agitation. While Mamata raised the issue in Kolkata and Delhi, Suvendu fought the battle on the ground, organizing villagers under the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee (BUPC). His fearless leadership against the Left government’s land acquisition plans earned him the title of “Jan Netā” (people’s leader). Analysts believe Nandigram was the turning point that paved the way for TMC’s 2011 victory, ending 34 years of Left rule.

Adhikari’s rise continued as he won the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat in 2009, defeating Left heavyweight Lakshman Seth. He retained his seat in 2014 despite the Modi wave, proving his independent strength. Within TMC, he became Mamata’s right-hand man, handling key ministries and expanding the party’s base in Junglemahal, Malda, and Murshidabad.

However, tensions grew after 2019. With Abhishek Banerjee’s growing dominance and strategist Prashant Kishor’s corporate-style politics, Adhikari felt sidelined. In December 2020, he resigned from TMC and joined BJP at Amit Shah’s rally in Medinipur, calling TMC a “private limited company.”

The 2021 Nandigram battle cemented his stature. Facing Mamata Banerjee directly, Suvendu defeated his former mentor in a contest that became symbolic of rebellion versus loyalty. Overnight, he became BJP’s biggest face in Bengal and was appointed Leader of Opposition.

In 2026, Adhikari’s organizational skills and sharp attacks on TMC over issues like Durga Puja violence and corruption have paid off. From three seats in 2016 to a two-thirds majority today, BJP’s rise in Bengal owes much to his strategy and grassroots connect.

As Mamata’s 15-year fortress crumbles, Suvendu Adhikari stands as the man who once helped her rise - and now, the one who engineered her fall.
