New Delhi/ Keonjhar, Mar 20: Keonjhar MP Anant Nayak called on Union Steel and Heavy Industries Minister C.D. Kumaraswamy in New Delhi today. Nayak presented a memorandum to the Minister seeking to resolve the issues concerning employees of Odisha Mineral Development Company (O.M.D.C). OMDC is a subsidiary of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (R.I.N.L).
Nayak mentioned that employees, especially those belonging to tribal communities, have not got a salary for seven to eight months. As a result, the employees have faced problems and have taken to the streets for over two months. The Ministery of Mines needs to intervene to resolve the issue.
In his letter, Nayak said the company was established in 1918 and is one of the oldest public sector undertakings in the country. It became a subsidiary of RINL in 2011. The company operates six iron and manganese mines in Odisha's Keonjhar district. However, due to various operational and regulatory issues, the operations of these mines have been closed for a long time. The Bhadrasahi iron ore mine has been operational from 2024 and the Belkundi iron and steel mine is expected to be operational in the next two months. Workers have not been paid salaries.
Apart from this, the sponge plant located at Thakurani in Keonjhar district has been non-operational since 2013 and due to this the financial condition of the employees has further deteriorated.
