Massive Fire at Surat Nylon Factory; Another Blaze Claims Five Lives in City
Surat Factory Fire and House Blaze

Key Points

A massive fire erupted at a nylon garment factory in Surat, sending thick smoke across the industrial zone. Firefighters rushed to contain the flames, with no casualties reported yet. In a separate tragedy, four women and a child died after toxic smoke engulfed a house during saree-packing work in Mithi Khadi locality. Officials suspect an electrical spark triggered the blaze.
Surat, Apr 1: A massive fire broke out at a nylon garment manufacturing factory in Surat, Gujarat, on Tuesday, triggering a large-scale emergency response in the city’s industrial zone. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the facility as multiple fire tenders rushed to the spot within minutes. Firefighters are currently battling the flames, working to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjoining units.

Authorities have cordoned off the area, and officials are assessing the extent of the damage. While the cause of the fire remains unknown, preliminary reports suggest that investigations are underway. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far in this incident.

This comes on the heels of another tragic fire in Surat earlier the same day. In the Mithi Khadi locality under Limbayat police station limits, a blaze erupted in a three-storey house where a family was engaged in saree-packing work using foam sheets. The fire brigade and ambulances rushed to the site, but despite rescue efforts, four women and a child lost their lives.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Kanan Desai stated that the fire was likely triggered by an electrical spark near a switchboard. Foam sheets placed nearby caught fire, releasing thick toxic smoke that engulfed the house. The victims—Shehnaz Begum Ansari (65), Husa Begam Ansari (18), Shabina Ansari (28), Parvin Abdul Ansari (19), and Subhan Ali Ansari (4)—died due to suffocation after being shifted to Civil Hospital in critical condition.

The twin incidents have raised concerns about fire safety in Surat, a city known for its textile and garment industries. While the nylon factory fire is still being contained, the tragic deaths in the residential blaze highlight the dangers posed by flammable materials and inadequate electrical safety measures.

Officials have urged industrial units and households engaged in manufacturing or packing work to adopt stricter fire safety protocols to prevent such tragedies. Further details on both incidents are awaited as investigations continue.
