Bhubaneswar, Sep 26: Union Minister for Jal Shakti, CR Patil on Thursday assured that the long-standing disputes over Mahanadi river water-sharing between Odisha and Chhattisgarh will be resolved soon.

On his visit to Odisha’s Puri district to participate in ‘Ek Ped, Maa Ke Naam’ program on the auspicious occasion of ‘Pakhwada’, the Union Minister assured that the legal dispute between the two states over Mahanadi river would come to an end soon.

“The tribunal is leaving no stone unturned to resolve the matter as soon as possible. We are committed to finding a fair and equitable solution that benefits both states,” the Minister said.

The Odisha government has lodged a complaint with the Central government regarding the construction of six industrial barrages on the Mahanadi and the lack of water inflow from the Mahanadi river and other sources located in the state of Chhattisgarh during the non-monsoon period.

The Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal was constituted on March 12, 2018, based on the intervention/order of the Supreme Court in response to the technical facts presented by the Odisha government.

Despite previous attempts to resolve differences, there has never been an inter-state agreement between the states of Odisha and Chhattisgarh to share the inter-state river water.
