Governance Framework Strengthened in Ladakh’s New Districts

Key Points

Ladakh LG V.K. Saxena has approved the appointment of DCs and SPs for the Union Territory’s five newly created districts, ensuring immediate governance and law & order operations in remote areas.
Srinagar, Apr 28: In a decisive move to strengthen governance and law & order in Ladakh, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena has approved the appointment of Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) for the Union Territory’s five newly created districts. The appointments come just a day after the official notification of Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass as new districts, raising Ladakh’s total from two to seven.

According to a statement from the L‑G’s Secretariat, the prompt assignment of charges is aimed at ensuring immediate operationalisation of governance structures and bringing administration closer to the people, particularly in remote and border areas. “Charges of Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police have been assigned to strengthen governance and law & order,” the statement said.

The Lieutenant Governor exhorted the newly appointed officials to take charge without delay and work with full vigour to fulfil the aspirations of the people. He emphasised that decentralised governance would significantly improve service delivery, enhance administrative efficiency, and strengthen law and order at the grassroots level.

Saxena also assured that the remaining posts of subordinate officials will be filled on priority, alongside logistical requirements, to ensure smooth and effective functioning of the new district administrations. He underlined that a robust administrative framework is being put in place to support long‑term governance and development goals, translating the vision of district creation into tangible benefits for the people.

The existing district administrations of Leh and Kargil will continue to function with their current officials, coordinating closely with the newly created districts during the transition phase.

The creation of five new districts in Ladakh is seen as a landmark step to decentralise administration and boost development in remote areas. By appointing DCs and SPs immediately, the government has signalled its commitment to operational readiness and inclusive governance.

This move is expected to improve law enforcement, accelerate development projects, and ensure that citizens in far‑flung regions of Ladakh have direct access to administrative services. The appointments mark a significant milestone in Ladakh’s governance journey, reinforcing the Union Territory’s focus on decentralisation and people‑centric administration.
