Viral News / Kolkata or Venice! A Metro City’s Never-Ending Love Story with Rainwater

Key Points
Kolkata streets turn into waterlogged playgrounds after light rain.
Viral video shows boy floating on mattress, swimming in flooded street.
Civic neglect sparks humor and frustration among residents and viewers.
Kolkata/Bhubaneswar, Sep 23: The monsoon, yet again, has exposed the secret feature of our metro cities —turning them into instant water parks. A light drizzle in Kolkata and ta-da …the streets compete with the river Ganga itself. Forget boating clubs; you can sail straight from your balcony to the nearest tea stall. Isn’t it amazing! Not for residents though — or at least not for majority.
It’s heartwarming to see how metro cities like Kolkata keep their promises: every year, citizens are guaranteed a brand-new version of “Aqua Adventure Park,” free of charge and open for all. From knee-deep wading, vehicle floating competitions, to surprise pothole diving.
Civic authorities deserve a standing ovation, well, a floating ovation for their consistency. They’ve managed to turn urban development into a yearly magic trick: Now you see the road, the next moment it's a farmhouse pond. And how can we ignore the best part? Every press release assures us that “adequate measures are being taken.”

A video posted on X shows a boy enjoying his moment, what people usually experience in pools or seawaters. The boy, likely in early teens, can be seen lying and relaxing on a mattress floating on the clogged water as the streets of Kolkata get flooded.

The video also shows the boy enjoying comforting waves, resulting from the vehicles’ movement. He can also be seen enjoying a short swimming session at the end of the video, with the bystanders and bypassers taking notice of him.
Little children might convert obstacles into fun activities, but people definitely face various problems while doing their everyday chores.
Though the romance with rain doesn't stop here. Perhaps Kolkata could brand itself as the “Eastern Venice” and attract tourists. Who wouldn’t want a romantic boat ride down a popular street, or a fishing session near a metro station? With a little imagination and a lot of neglect, anything is possible.
