New Delhi/Bhubaneswar, May 14: The Udaipur Marble Association has announced a complete trade ban on Turkish marble imports, citing Turkey’s support for Pakistan.

This decision, backed unanimously by industry leaders, is expected to impact India’s marble trade, as nearly 70% of imported marble comes from Turkey.

Kapil Surana, President of the Udaipur Marble Processing Committee, emphasised that Udaipur is Asia’s largest marble exporter, and the association’s members have collectively agreed to cease business with Turkey.

He stated that if all marble associations across India follow suit, it would send a strong message globally that India’s industries stand firmly with the government.

Surana further explained that India imports between 14-18 lakh tonnes of marble annually, with Turkey being a major supplier. The trade volume is estimated at ₹2,500-3,000 crore, making this decision a significant economic move. He believes that halting Turkish imports will boost demand for Indian marble, benefiting domestic producers.

The association’s decision aligns with national interests, reinforcing the stance that business should not override patriotism. With 120 marble units in Udaipur, of which 30-40 export marble internationally, this shift could reshape India’s marble trade landscape.

Industry leaders have urged other trade bodies to join the movement, ensuring that India’s economic policies reflect its geopolitical stance.
