New Delhi, Jan 1: India will soon get its first Vande Bharat sleeper train, with Indian Railways announcing the Guwahati–Howrah route for the new service.
The sleeper-version Vande Bharat Express is expected to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2026.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared details of the new train, which marks a departure from the existing Vande Bharat services that operate only with chair cars.
Flag-off planned in January 2026
According to officials, the inaugural run of the Vande Bharat sleeper train is likely to take place on January 17 or 18, 2026. The train will connect Guwahati in Assam with Howrah in West Bengal, offering overnight travel facilities on the long-distance route.
Sleeper coaches a first for Vande Bharat
Unlike earlier Vande Bharat trains, which are equipped only with seating arrangements, the new version will feature sleeper coaches. Indian Railways has released photographs of the train’s interiors, showing berths designed to allow passengers to sleep comfortably during the journey.
Officials said the introduction of sleeper coaches is aimed at improving passenger comfort on long-haul routes and expanding the utility of the Vande Bharat platform beyond daytime travel.

Fares announced
Indian Railways has also announced the fare structure for the Guwahati–Howrah Vande Bharat sleeper train. The 3AC fare has been fixed at Rs 2,300, which includes meals. The fare for 2AC has been set at Rs 3,000, while passengers travelling in 1AC will be charged Rs 3,600.
The service is expected to strengthen rail connectivity between the Northeast and eastern India while offering a faster and more comfortable overnight travel option.
