New Delhi, Dec 6: In response to heightened passenger demand due to widespread IndiGo flight cancellations, Indian Railways has strengthened 37 trains with 116 extra coaches and scheduled 114 additional trips across its network to increase seat availability and ensure smoother travel for affected passengers.
The measures come as thousands of air travellers across the country were left stranded following large-scale disruptions, prompting the Railways to step in and ease long-distance travel pressure.
Southern Railway Leads Capacity Expansion
Southern Railway (SR) has added the highest number of extra coaches, strengthening 18 trains. Additional chair car and sleeper class coaches have been deployed on high-demand routes. Effective from December 6, 2025, this enhancement is expected to significantly improve travel capacity across the southern region.
Northern and Western Railways Add Extra AC Coaches
Northern Railway (NR) has increased capacity on eight trains, adding Third AC and Chair Car coaches on busy northern corridors. These measures are operational from today and are aimed at handling the sudden rise in passenger movement.
Western Railway (WR) has strengthened four major trains with Third AC and Second AC coaches from December 6, catering to the heavy flow of travellers between the western region and the national capital.
ECR, ECoR, ER, and NFR Expand High-Demand Routes
East Central Railway (ECR) has enhanced the Rajendra Nagar–New Delhi (12309) service with five additional Second AC coaches, ensuring higher capacity on the crucial Bihar–Delhi route.
East Coast Railway (ECoR) has added Second AC coaches on five trips of the Bhubaneswar–New Delhi services (20817/20811/20823), strengthening Odisha–Delhi connectivity.
Eastern Railway (ER) has expanded three major trains with sleeper class coaches across six trips between December 7 and 8.
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has strengthened two key trains with Third AC and Sleeper coaches for eight trips, ensuring uninterrupted capacity across the northeast.
Four Special Trains Introduced
To further support passengers, Indian Railways is also operating four special services:
Gorakhpur–Anand Vihar Terminal–Gorakhpur Special (05591/05592): Four trips from December 7–9
New Delhi–Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan–New Delhi Reserved Vande Bharat Special (02439/02440): Runs on December 6
New Delhi–Mumbai Central–New Delhi Superfast Special (04002/04001): Two trips on December 6–7
Hazrat Nizamuddin–Thiruvananthapuram Central Superfast Special (04080): One-way service on December 6
